Instrument Tuner documentation

The Instrument Tuner uses your microphone to detect pitch in real time. It shows the nearest note, frequency, cents offset, pitch accuracy needle, concert pitch setting, instrument transposition, and staff notation in both treble and bass clefs.

Tune an instrument in five steps

Choose your tuning reference, select the instrument profile, start the microphone, play one note at a time, then tune until the needle is centered and the cents value is close to zero.

Quick start

How to use the tuner

  1. Open the Instrument Tuner tool.
  2. Set Concert Pitch. Use A4 = 440 Hz unless your ensemble uses another reference.
  3. Select your instrument from Instrument / Tune.
  4. Click Start Tuner and allow microphone access.
  5. Play one clear sustained note.
  6. Watch the note, frequency, cents value, and pitch accuracy needle.
  7. Tune the instrument until the needle is centered and the cents value is near 0 cents.

Pitch readout

Read note, frequency, and cents together

The note card shows the nearest detected note. Frequency shows the measured pitch in hertz. Cents show how far the detected pitch is from the target note: negative means flat, positive means sharp, and zero means in tune.

A cent is one hundredth of a semitone. For practical tuning, within about ±3 to ±5 cents is usually close enough for many instruments, while exposed studio or ensemble work may require tighter tuning.

Pitch accuracy

Use the needle for final tuning

The accuracy meter places flat notes to the left, sharp notes to the right, and in-tune notes in the center. Tune slowly and wait for the note to settle. String, brass, and wind instruments can move several cents during the attack and sustain of a note.

Graphic notation

Confirm the note on treble and bass clefs

The tuner also draws the detected note on a staff. This is useful when checking written notes, reading transposed parts, or verifying whether a pitch sits above, inside, or below the common staff range.

Sharp and flat symbols are shown next to the note when needed. Ledger lines appear for notes above or below the staff.

Instrument and tuning profiles

The Instrument / Tune dropdown controls the displayed note context. Concert-pitch instruments use the detected pitch directly. Transposing instruments display the written note expected by that instrument.

Concert pitch options

Concert pitch defines the reference frequency for A4. Changing this setting shifts every target note used by the tuner.

A4 = 440 Hz Standard modern reference and the best default for most users.
A4 = 432 Hz Alternative lower reference sometimes used by preference.
A4 = 442 Hz Common in some orchestral and ensemble contexts.

Technical notes

How microphone tuning works

The tuner runs in the browser. It listens to the microphone, estimates the fundamental frequency, converts the frequency to the nearest musical note, then reports the tuning error in cents.

Microphone capture The browser asks for microphone access and analyzes the incoming signal locally.
Pitch detection The tuner estimates the fundamental frequency from short audio windows.
Reference pitch Detected notes are calculated relative to the selected A4 reference, such as 440 Hz or 442 Hz.
Cents offset The difference between the detected pitch and the nearest target note is shown in cents.
Transposition Instrument selection changes the displayed written note for Bb, Eb, F, and concert-pitch instruments.
Staff notation The detected note is drawn on treble and bass clefs with accidentals and ledger lines when needed.

Best practices for accurate tuning

Troubleshooting

The tuner does not start Allow microphone permission in the browser and make sure no other app is blocking the input device.
The note jumps around Play one clear sustained note, reduce background noise, and move closer to the microphone.
The needle shakes Small pitch movement is normal. Let the note settle, then tune toward the center instead of chasing every flicker.
The note name looks wrong for my instrument Check the Instrument / Tune dropdown. Transposing instruments display written pitch differently from concert pitch.
No pitch is detected Play a louder note, avoid very short attacks, and try a middle-register note first.
The pitch seems consistently high or low Confirm the Concert Pitch setting. Most modern tuning uses A4 = 440 Hz, but orchestras may use 442 Hz.
